Mount Vernon Letter: Establish Ground Rules

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

Clarification on one issue might help people decide how to vote on the meal tax referendum.

If the meal tax passes, will 70 percent of the new funds be used to increase the existing school system budget? Or will it be cut and then replaced with those new funds?

Either way, future FCPS budget cuts could occur anytime, so establishing the ground rules up front is important. There's usually no such thing as a temporary tax, regardless of where the money ends up being spent.
