Mount Vernon Letter: County’s Gain Would be Others’ Loss

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

The June 16 edition of the Gazette had two letters related to the Fairfax County's Board of Supervisors proposed action for a "meals tax."

As a Fairfax County resident since 1965 I agree with Mr. Kidwell on both issues he addressed including favoring a meals tax to raise funds.

Mr. H. Jay Spiegel opposes the meals tax and is in favor of the county attempting to have Richmond increase the percentage of the amount of revenue sent to Richmond returned to the county. Fairfax County is no

doubt one of the richest counties in the United States and, if not the richest, in Virginia. Many of the 95 counties in Virginia are dependent on the Richmond current revenue returns. Hence, increasing Fairfax's

returns would of course have an adverse impact on many other counties.

Thousands of tourists visit Fairfax County annually and obviously patronize the outstanding restaurants. Concurrently the residents of the county also take advantage of eating out.

I believe our elected officials to Richmond and including the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors are doing a magnificent job of managing the county. I for one will definitely vote for the "meals tax" in November.
