Unsung Heroes

Rotary project raises $16k for local nonprofits.

The Rotary Club of Alexandria raised $16,000 for local nonprofits through its third annual Flags for Heroes program, a display of 200 flags along the George Washington Parkway at Cedar Knoll Restaurant.

The project was made possible by the Androus Foundation in honor of Arthur “Tommy” Androus. A card attached to each flag bears the name of a “hero” along with the individual who sponsored the flag in honor of a friend, family member, veteran or other hero in their life.

“This is a very special project and the Androus family is proud to be a part of it,” said Deborah Androus at a July 9 sponsors reception at the restaurant.

In addition to the Androus Foundation, other sponsors included: Washington Corporate Sponsors Cafferty Commercial Real Estate Services, Simpson Real Estate Services, Clarke & Sampson Insurance, KWC Certified Public Accountants, and John Marshall Bank; Lincoln Corporate Sponsors are Robin Arnold of McEnearney Associates, and Burke & Herbert Bank of Alexandria; Jefferson Corporate Sponsors are Bent Ear Solutions, LLC, Franconia Family Medicine, Mclaughlin Ryder Investments, Tres Trop, LLC, Highlands Financial Solutions, Alexandria Wealth Management Group, National Consumer Credit, and Donna Cramer of McEnearney Associates, Inc.

“Despite the restrictions of COVID-19, we were able to continue this tradition of honoring our heroes,” said Rotary president Sharon Meisel. “We are especially grateful to our sponsors for their support during this challenging time.”
